Essential oils are essential to the
survival of plants - either for protection or for
propagation. When you crush the petal of a rose or tear the leaf from a
peppermint plant, a liquid substance emerges. These tiny drops of liquid are called essential oils. Citrus oils are pressed from the peels or rinds of fruit.
Essential oils are complex, highly
fragrant and volatile substances, with varying degrees of complexity, fragrance,
and volatility. They are the most potent and concentrated extracts of various
parts of flowers, fruits, leaves, spices, roots, and woods.
While in the plant, the essence molecules play a key role in the biochemistry
of the plant -- they are located between the cells of the plant and these
molecules act as regulators and messengers. They carry all of the unique
properties of the plant. They protect the plant from parasites and disease, and play an important
role in fertilization and assist the plant's adaptation to its environment.
Once extracted, the chemical constituents of a particular essential oil will
determine its therapeutic properties. Life in the human body is based on the
chemistry of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. These are called the
"Building blocks of Life." Carbon is also the basis for the
constituents of essential oils.
Different oils have
different properties - many contain multiple properties.
Oils may be:
- analgesic (pain relieving)
- antiviral
- antiseptic
- bactericidal

modern
world is barely beginning to comprehend the value of nature's own
pharmacy,
and how these essential oils can be used to improve health and well
being.
